The Principal's Desk

 Dear SMSA Community,

My name is Jose Colon; I take this opportunity to introduce myself as the new Principal serving the students, staff, parents and community partners of the Sport and Medical Sciences Academy.  It is truly a personal honor and privilege to have the opportunity to lead and serve as Principal of the school where I spent the first 15 years of my career in education.

During my time at SMSA I served as the school’s Career Coordinator, Spanish Teacher, Dean of Students and Assistant Principal.  Six years ago, I was asked to assume the principalship of the Expeditionary Learning Academy at Moylan School and to serve as the Executive Principal of three schools in Hartford’s Expeditionary Learning network. Most recently I served as the Executive Principal of Hartford Public High School’s Academy of Nursing and Health Sciences and the Law and Government Academy.

One of my primary goals as your Principal is to provide the leadership and to create the conditions that will facilitate high quality instruction in a safe and positive environment for all students.  Secondly, to secure the necessary resources and build the structures that will strengthen our school’s themes thereby providing all students multiple opportunities to learn and grow.  Through a positive and productive partnership with students, staff, parents and community partners I am confident that we will continue to grow and become the best high school in our region.

While I have a strong foundation and understanding of our school community, during the next several weeks I will continue to work and to learn as much as I can about the our school. Your work and contributions to our school are necessary for our collective success.

It is my hope to meet you and to learn about your experience, your contributions and your ideas to make our school better.  I am looking forward to meeting and reconnecting with all of the amazing people that make up our great school.

It is great to be back home!

Best Regards,

José A. Colón
